Celebrate Earth Day by making real changes!

wecandoit-169.jpgWe all know how it goes. Earth Day rolls around and its all over the news, our inbox is flooded with emails about how to green our lives, we talk to people at a local community celebration, get all fired up, and then the warm weather hits, we’re outside, and we forget all about the things we decided to change on April 22.

This year, I’m going to try not to let that happen. So I’ve taken Sierra Club’s Earth Day Pledge, which challenges each of us to spend part or all of our Economic Stimulus tax refund on renewable energy and energy efficiency.

I just pledged to use our stimulus money to do as many of the following as we can:

  • install a small solar project (outdoor lighting or a solar water heater kit)
  • install ceiling fans to reduce or eliminate A/C usage
  • buy those nifty power strips that don’t suck energy when things are turned off
  • buy a blanket to better insulate our water heater

We also took the Crunchy Domestic Goddess’s Earth Day advice to make Earth Day a family affair (and you certainly shouldn’t miss out on the opportunity to participate in her gigantic Earth-Mother’s Day Giveaway!). This weekend, the little ones screened the rocks out of the soil as Matt & I planted two fruit trees and seven grape vines to contribute to our Edible Landscape. Gabriel also helped with watering duties, although I think he had more fun watering the house (and an open window). Silly monkey!

And, finally, before you ditch the computer and go outside to enjoy Earth Day as it was meant to be enjoyed (i.e. not in front of a computer), take a look at what you can do to create a more sustainable landscape over at GreenArtz.
