Gluttons for Punishment

pup.JPGWell, we did it. Tonight we are the proud new guardians of a German Shorthair Pointer. The little dude doesn’t have a name yet (we summarily rejected Gabriel’s suggestion–Bruce Arfy-Arf Taffy Artz and Lily’s suggestion that sounded something like “Linda”), so we’ve mainly been calling him “No dill hole!” seconds after he jumps on the kids, runs away with a Gabriel toy/pen/shoe/you name it in his mouth, or gnaws on one of us. He sure is a cutie pie though and is actually very sweet, just not very socialized.

You see, we’ve had a search in at the humane society for months for a German Shorthair and last week, while Matt was in Brazil, two brothers came in. They both went right back out, and there was no way I was going to get a dog without Matt’s input (although I threatened). So last night, little dude’s guardians returned him after just over 24 hours because their little boy decided he didn’t really want a dog (????). We called right away, put him on hold, and came to meet him tonight.

It was pretty much instant love so we brought him home (I had so little doubt that this would be the case that I had already purchased puppy necessities like a crate, leash, and pooper scooper at Petsmart before we even got to the humane society). He’s about 3 months old, but was a stray so no one’s sure. He sure does look pure bred, but his tail is not docked (which doesn’t bother me one bit). He’s thin as a rail and definitely in need of some puppy obedience, but I think we’re up for the challenge (or maybe we’re just insane).

I have a date with little dude for my first run of the season (um, maybe of the last four seasons) tomorrow morning. His “heal” could use a little work, so why not start immediately ;)

He’s already settling in and did awesome in the crate last night with only one wake-up for potty break and no accidents. I’ll take all the help I can get so please send books, clickers, good thoughts, whatever our way :)

And names. He is still nameless! Poor little dude. Maybe we’ll have to call him LD for short except that people might think we’re saying he’s learning disabled (although frankly we have no proof to the contrary yet!)…

You ARE a glutton for punishment! ;)

Congrats on the new member of your family!! Let me know if you need any advice. The puppy stuff I’ve done ;) In fact, I have some dog obedience books I’m getting rid of. You want them? And somewhere I have a pack of clickers for clicker training…no clue where they ARE though so no promises that I can find them for you!!

    Have fun!

Congrats and good luck! He sure is a doll! Just like the rest of our children, I’m sure his cuteness will save his ass time and time again!
