Good question! Worms are the most visible allies in terms of making compost, so I always recommend bins with an open bottom to allow the worms to move up into the compost. But microscopic bacteria are what really do the heavy lifting in the composting process. While there are some store-bought enzymes and "compost starters" you can purchase to try to speed things up, the best thing to do to get the right microorganisms in your compost is add some plain old garden soil.

Does that answer your question?

Hi Julie! Amy of Crunchy Domestic Goddess told me to pop by after our discussion of dumpster diving and compost making on her blog last night.

Nice article! I'm afraid, however, that as a long term compost producer myself that I must take humorous exception to your title. We are making soil, not dirt. Dirt is what you have under your fingernails after spending a day slogging around in the garden! : )

Here is my Ode to Compost. Now, back to poking around your blog....

Oh I see the confusion. We did start by trying only new things, but it is hard to keep that up every week! :) Glad you are joining us!

Oh, I know it's made from scratch, I just thought we were supposed to be making something brand-new that we'd never made before from scratch and I've been composting for almost 10 years now :)

I'm rather fanatical about composting and if there's a short list of things that are easy to do that would have a HUGE impact on our environment, I think composting should be on that list.

Thanks for visiting!

:) Julie

Composting is made from scratch in my book, and since I wrote the rules for the carnival, I say you are playing by the rules! :)

I will be including this Tuesday in the weekly roundup at Stop the Ride</a
