Just four days into our first attempt at indoor gardening, we have sprouts! Yesterday, I transferred the four planters we have in the basement to the shelf with the lights and set them to run 16 hours per day to simulate June’s prime growing conditions.
The most sprouts, unsurprisingly, are in the lettuce category–the Mesclun Mix is going crazy as is the Simpson Black Seed lettuce. But there are also numerous Kale and Watercress seeds, so it looks like our garden is well underway. I’m a little worried that my herbs are not going to take because the temps in the basement are not warm enough, so I may have to move that planter upstairs until they sprout and then move them down under the lights.
Although I’ve been starting seeds indoors for about six years, I’ve never tried to sprout anything that was intended to spend its entire life from sprout to consumption indoors. This could easily become an obsession, especially if I have free fresh lettuce in late February as I’m expecting.
