Miller Farm – Farm Fest 2007

Yesterday we took the kids over to Platteville to Miller Farm’s annual Farm Festival. This family-owned farm, produce from which we enjoy frequently via the Longmont Farmer’s Market, opens its doors during the season to show people how a farm operates. In the fall, you can actually jump aboard a hay wagon pulled by a tractor and stop in each of the fields to pick vegetables. Needless to say, the kids loved picking pumpkins & other veggies, and the hay wagon was a treat.
Since this summer was the first summer in more than a decade that didn’t involve a vegetable garden, I was more than a little excited by the prospect of getting to harvest veggies, even if I was unsure what would be available in October. Luckily for us, the mild fall meant that all the tender crops were still available and we brought home two wagons full of produce.
That means today I’m enjoying the cool fall weather by canning & preserving. Although I haven’t broken out the food saver (yet…there’s still time and the kids are both asleep!), I have canned 14 pints of pickles (my brother & sister-in-law will be happy to know that for the first time ever, I made dill slices in addition to my traditional bread & butter chips!), have about 10 pounds of tomatoes sliced & drying in the dehydrator, and have plans for the oodles of pumpkins, corn, green beans, peppers, onions & potatoes in my garage!
We came home yesterday afternoon and planted about 30 ornamental grasses and a couple of shrubs in the front yard too, completing the design and fulfilling my need to get my hands in the dirt. Overall, a good weekend for this gardener

Dear Lord, I’m impressed. I came home from Miller, grabbed a sandwich and a drink then laid down for half an hour. Then I put the produce that needed it in the ‘fridge, harvested the rest of the chilis from my garden and sent T to pick up dinner. I was wiped out!!! I have no idea how you managed to plant plants after that – or start preserving
Now I feel like a wimp!

It might have something to do with the fact that I’m not pregnant and you are
